I left with a smile

One of my best friends was diagnosed a viral meningitis last week. He only told us when he was already recovering - while staying in hospital, where he still is. I biked there the same day.
As he was already in good spirits I was joking, that he was always busy with being the most ill of our gang. He laughed and did not deny. Anyway, his life gratefully is not under threat, and the biggest danger seems currently, that he might have to stay for another 2 weeks rather than one in hospital.

I gave him my old discman (not needed anymore since the invention of MP3-players) and we bought him two sets of audiobooks on CD. He was very grateful, as reading is still causing him headache. I appreciated to find myself in the role of someone who could give help, rather than asking for the same for once. Also I am lucky enough to have an illness that can be treated with pills while sitting at home, rather than hanging on an infusion in a hospital bed.

Today was also the day of my weekly checkup. In the end, after signing some nasty forms related to my treatment, the doc asked me a "timid" question: they need case studies to discuss on them for evaluation of the treatments applied. She wanted to know if I was ok with discussing my illness, treatment and state with the her and rest of the hospital's department (alltogether 30 doctors) in June.
"I met at least one third of them already anyway!" I remarked sarcastically. We started to count, and indeed I met at least seven in person or over the phone meanwhile.
Other people chair AIESEC conferences, me at least I get the exclusive jobs: I chaired a meeting of farm workers in the Berner Oberland 2 years ago, the Partners dinner of AIESEC in India in December and in June I am going to have my 30minutes of fame as a medical case study. I left the hospital with a smile.

Hahaha, sorry for laughing, but it put a smile on my face too :-) I remember that "guine-pig" feeling myself from my (so far only...) stay at the hospital in Summer 2001
